18 Arakenese suspected of attacking a police station in Sittwe on 3 June, 2012, were produced by police in Sittwe Township court on Thursday, report their lawyers and relatives.

This is the first time they have been produced in court after being arrested by authorities as suspects in the attack on the Sittwe police station, where assailants used sticks, stones, and bottles, said the lawyer who is defending them in the case.

“Police charged them under Section 6 (1) for destroying public property. The judge also gave them three days’ remand to interrogate them about the case after police asked for it,” the lawyer said.

On 12 July, the 18 suspects will be produced again in the court.

The police arrested over 30 people just before the incident connected to the attack on the police station, but later some of those people were released after being deemed innocent.

12 people were injured in the police station attack by police firing rounds, and four of those injured have been sent to Yangon, the former capital of Burma, for treatment of serious injuries.
