"Now we find losses in exporting shrimp to Bangladesh because the traders here are playing dirty tricks with our shrimp, saying that our shrimp are not up to international standards," he said.

He added that Burmese traders have to give extra weight for removal of the shrimps' tails, as demanded by the Bangladesh traders, despited the regular export of shrimp with tails.

"They told us that the tails of the shrimp need to be cut for exporting to Malaysia and Singapore, and demanded one extra kilogram on sale for every 10 kilograms of shrimp, so we suffer losses with our shrimp," he said, adding that shrimp were also being discarded for on claims of being rotten or frozen at low temperatures.

According to the source, the Burmese traders held a meeting last Saturday in the border trade office in Sittwe and decided to meet with their Bangladesh counterparts soon to prevent future losses from their shrimp exports.

It has been three years since traders began exporting shrimp from Arakan State to Bangladesh through the border ports in Sittwe and Teknaf.

The Burmese shrimp are qualified in three grades - the first is currently offered at 750 Taka per kilogram, the second grade at 630 Taka, and the third grade at 550 Taka - for purchase at the border market in Bangladesh.

The border currency exchange rate between Bangladesh and Burma today was at 1.00 Taka to 12.00 Kyat.
