New Delhi - Detained Burmese pro-democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on Thursday was visited by an eye-specialist for a check-up, a party official said.

Nyan Win, spokesperson for the National League for Democracy, told Mizzima on Friday that Aung San Suu Kyi was visited by her family doctor, Tin Myo Win, along with eye specialist Dr. Kan Nyunt.

However Nyan Win commented, "We don't know any details of the visit or information regarding the health situation of Aung San Suu Kyi."

The two doctors' visit yesterday was the first since the military junta reportedly acquiesced to certain demands of Aung San Suu Kyi last month, including a monthly visit by her family physician.

In early September, rumors spread that the Nobel Peace Laureate was on hunger strike in protest against her treatment, after she refused fresh food supplies beginning August 15th.

While the rumors of her being on hunger strike seem to have been incorrect, her lawyer, Kyi Win, said in mid-September that the government had agreed to partially grant Aung San Suu Kyi's demands and that the opposition leader would once again accept fresh food supplies.

According to Kyi Win, the detained pro-democracy leader will be allowed a monthly visit by a doctor for the purpose of a health check-up, receive family correspondence  and foreign magazines, and her two aides – Khin Khin Win and her daughter Win Pa Pa – will be allowed to move about freely during the day.

Meanwhile, Nyan Win said Aung San Suu Kyi and her lawyer Kyi Win have completed their preparations of an appeal letter against her continued detention and will soon submit the petition.

"The appeal will be sent to the government cabinet in Naypyitaw very soon," Nyan Win said.
