New Delhi - Incessant rain on Wednesday inundated the basement of Mandalay international airport and caused disturbances in telephone lines.

Despite the lower level of the airport being flooded, where the electrical control room and other electrical materials and computers are situated, scheduled flights were not interrupted.

Following continuous rain on Wednesday, Myit Nge River near Mandalay overran its banks, flooding the bridge and submerging the Rangoon-Mandalay highway.

"It has not flooded in the airport, but water has entered the basement. So, currently phone lines are not working. We can only use mobile phones," an official at the ticketing office of Air Mandalay told Mizzima.

"I think the water level will drop by this evening," the official added.
