The United National Democratic Organization claims it will expose and put cases of human rights violations during the time of the military junta on the record.

During a ceremony to set up organizing committees for four regions and states at the Judson Hall in Yangon on 23rd October the organization made a statement claiming the former junta needs to be brought to book.

U David Hla Myint, the organization’s general secretary, told Mizzima, “There is a need to put the violation of human rights by the military junta during its 20-year term on record.”

The NGO, said to be made up of political activists who are not members of the opposition National League for Democracy, aims to investigate human rights cases during the period from 1988 to 2011, under the State Law and Order Restoration Council or SLORC and the State Peace and Development Council or SPDC.

Dr Zaw Myint, vice chairman of the group, said, “After the compilation, we will send a report to the appropriate people of the State.”

The organization aims to help victims of human rights abuse receive recognition, rehabilitation and if necessary, medical treatment.

According to the statement released at the meeting, a human rights violation investigation committee will implement the task of gathering information on a nationwide level.

The committee will include Buddhist monks involved in the 2007 unrest, ethnic leaders, prominent politicians, former 1988 student leaders and even former students who protested the 1962 coup by General Ne Win .
