The first phase of compiling lists of eligible voters for the planned 2015 general elections will begin in Yangon, Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw and some townships in Shan State in November, the Yangon Region Election Commission Chairman U Ko Ko told Mizzima October 13.
The first phase will run from November to December, the second phase from December 2014 to March 2015, and the third phase from February to May 2015, according to the Union Election Commission.
U Ko Ko said, “It is the first time, so in choosing the townships in Yangon to compile the lists, we’ve chosen townships that have relatively small populations first.”
In the first phase, the lists of eligible voters will be compiled in 14 townships in Yangon, 15 townships in Mandalay, six townships in Nay Pyi Taw Council and six townships in southern Shan State.
The commission’s lists of potential voters will be based on the national census data of “Form 66 (a)” compiled by the General Administration Department, according to the commission.
Based on the results of the first phase, the commission will choose other townships to conduct the second and third phases of compiling lists.The lists of eligible voters will be stored on computers at the commission’s offices in townships in Yangon Region.
