The antiquated Pansodan Jetty and ferries are about to be replaced by a new jetty and three 1,000-seat double-decker ferries at the end of November.

Work is due for completion shortly funded by a grant programme of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The new ferries will take over the popular route between Pansodan in Kyauktada Township and Dala Township, across the river, in the west of Yangon. The jetty is used by thousands of people every day from 5 am to 10 pm.

The present jetty is considered old and dangerous.

Project information officer Daw Tin Zar Aung said the new jetty and boats were part of efforts to maintain good relations between Myanmar and Japan.

The three ferry boats cost US$4million each and are part of the aid package.
