A commission to choose an appropriate electoral system was formed and a Tatmadaw MP warned that the introduction of proportional representation could lead to extremists and terrorists becoming MPsduring debate in the Pyithu Hluttaw on July 29.

Lieutenant Colonel Phay Kyaing added that the best electoral system for the nation would be one that takes into account the structure of the country, the stability of regions and the dispersal of Myanmar’s population and ethnic minorities.

“The interests of national security must be prioritised rather than the interests of any one party or individual,” said Lt-Col Phay Kyaing.

During the debate, U Phay Than (Rakhine National Party, Myay Pon township, Rakhine State) said the results of the 2010 election, ran through first-past-the-post system, had effectively created an elected dictatorship by the Union Solidarity and Development Party.
