More than 400 residents of a refugee camp in Kachin State have been moved to safer areas after it was hit by a series of landslides, including one which killed five people.
Residents of the Jay Yang camp for internally displaced persons in Laiza Township on the border with China told Mizzima on July 27 that the landslides had followed unusually heavy rain.
The camp has been hit by at least 10 landslides since July 22, when five people were killed in a tent.
An official at the camp, U Sai Bwan Wine Du, told Mizzima on July 27 that 123 tents had been moved away from hillsides to safer areas.
The camp has 8,885 residents, living in 1,619 tents, he said.
A member of the Jay Yang management committee, U Ma Khaw Tang Gwan, said the landslides were the first to affect the camp since it was established in 2011.
