A Kayin splinter group has condemned comments it says were made earlier this month by Karen National Union central executive committee Padoh Manh Nyein Maung that the KNU represents all members of the ethnic group.
The comments on June 2 and 3 that the KNU represented all Kayin were "totally untrue and full of manipulation for their own self-interest and glory," the KNU-KNLA Peace Council said in a statement issued on June 9.
The statement also condemned comments reported by Mizzima Daily on June 4 which quoted Padoh Manh Nyein Maung as criticising the campaign to amend Article 436 of the Constitution.
More than 90 percent of the Myanmar people, "including the ethnics", support changes to the constitution, the statement said.
"Without the change from the 2008 Constitution to a solely People's Constitution, Burma's future will go nowhere," it said.
"The KNU-KNLA Peace Council totally supports Aung San Suu Kyi, the 1988 Generation students and those who are striving for the freedom of all citizens of Burma, including the ethnics, and we will work together with any political party who is fulfilling the will of the people," the statement said.
The KNU-KNLA Peace Council was formed in January 2007 by former Karen National Liberation Army brigade commander Brigadier-General Htay Maung after he was dismissed by the Karen National Union for initiating peace talks with the Tatmadaw with the approval of the KNU central committee.
