Government spokesperson and Deputy Information Minister U Ye Htut has apologised after a doctored image of opposition National League for Democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was posted on his wife's Facebook page.

The apology came after a shared image of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi wearing a hijab appeared on Daw Khin Sandar Tun's Facebook page.

"I apologise to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and those who love and support her," U Ye Htut said in the apology, posted on his Facebook page on June 6.

"I also apologise to those who criticised this incident on my Facebook page," he said, adding that as a government officer and head of a family, he had failed to fulfill his duty to teach family members to behave in accordance with democratic standards.

U Ye Htut said the image had been deleted as soon as he became aware of it and his wife's Facebook account had been temporarily closed.

"It is in breach of our accepted ethics," he said.
