The leader of the opposition National League for Democracy, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, has denied breaking the law in her first public reaction to a warning from the Union Election Commission over comments she made at a rally to promote constitutional reform.

Asked to respond to the warning as she arrived for the re-opening of the Pyithu Hluttaw on May 28, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi initially replied: "Have I ever violated the law?"

She then added: "I have never violated the law."

The warning from the UEC was contained in a letter dated May 22 that was sent to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in her capacity as NLD leader, with copies sent to all political parties.

The warning followed comments Daw Aung San Suu Kyi made at a rally in Mandalay on May 18 when she challenged Tatmadaw MPs to support the campaign for amendments to the 2008 Constitution.

The letter quoted Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as having said: “I would like to suggest that you prove you are not doing this for authority, power and special opportunities. The word ‘suggest’ here is more like a challenge. I want to challenge you.”

The letter warned the NLD leader that Tatmadaw MPs were sitting in the parliament under the provisions of the 2008 Constitution and her comments were inappropriate.
