A 17-year-old boy who was killed by a train after falling asleep on railway tracks at Pyay on May 7 had been sniffing glue, a Railway Police officer said.

A 16-year-old boy who had also been sniffing glue was seriously injured in the same incident and had been hospitalised with head and leg injuries, said Railway Police Captain Aung Win.

He said the teenagers had fallen asleep on tracks near Pyay Railway Station when they were hit by the train at about 11pm.

The train had run over the chest of the boy who died, Railway Police Capt Aung Win said.

A tin of glue was found in the hand of one of teenagers, he said.

Lawyer U Myint Aye, who helped to found the Helping Hands Network, said there was no law prohibiting glue sniffing.

U Myint Aye said there were no clinics or treatment to help those addicted to sniffing glue.

The Helping Hands Network launched a campaign three months to ban the sale of solvents to minors.
