A coalition representing Myanmar’s main armed ethnic groups will meet this week to choose its representatives on a committee tasked with drafting a nationwide ceasefire agreement.

The nine-members of the National Ceasefire Coordinating Team to join government negotiators on the committee will be chosen on the basis of their political and legal competence, NCCT member U Khun Okkar, said in Yangon on March 17.

They will be selected at an NCCT meeting due to take place in Thailand, on March 19 and 20, he said.

Government negotiators and the NCCT announced the breakthrough decision to appoint the joint committee in Yangon on March 10 after two days of talks at the Myanmar Peace Center.

The committee, which will comprise nine members from each side, is due to begin drafting the agreement early next month.

The nine-members from the Union Peace Work Committee to be appointed to the committee will comprise three representatives each from the government, parliament and the Tatmadaw.

The NCCT was formed at a meeting of armed ethnic groups held at Laiza, Kachin State, in October last year.
