National League for Democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has urged members of her party to have respect and understanding for all citizens to help strengthen the bonds of national unity.

NLD“To attain unity, one must give understanding to one another and show respect to each other,” she told party members from Na-htoe-gyi Township in Mandalay Region who had travelled to Nay Pyi Taw to observe a session of the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw on March 10.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi also said citizens should understand that human rights did not only mean their individual rights but also the rights of others.

“You must respect other people’s rights so that they will respect yours,” she said.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who chairs the Pyithu Hluttaw Rule of Law and Tranquility Committee, also spoke out against offensive language and the use of force to settle disputes.

“It’s not good to offend others, and if you try to solve problems by using force, the nation will not have ever-lasting peace,” she said.

The opposition leader said building unity was especially important at a time when amendments were being considered to the constitution.

The constitution was the basic foundation for all national affairs, she said. Myanmar would be prosperous only if a systematic and good political system was enshrined in the constitution.
