The National League for Democracy plans to take legal action against Amyotha Hluttaw MP U Hla Shwe for allegedly defaming the NLD, a member of the party’s central executive committee told Mizzima on March 3.

U Win Htein said the decision to take legal action followed an interview with U Hla Swe (Union Solidarity and Development Party, Magway) published in Hot News journal which quoted him as saying that except for NLD leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, all of the party’s members are “rubbish”.

U Hla Swe is also alleged to have used a derogatory term to refer to the NLD and to have said that NLD members should display photos of themselves rather than of independence hero Aung San.

U Win Htein, (Pyithu Hluttaw, Meiktila), who was speaking on the sidelines of a dinner attended by NLD members and representatives of ethnic minority groups, said the central executive committee made the decision to take legal action against U Hla Swe without consulting Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

“We told her after we made the decision,” U Win Htein said. “Daw Suu was sorry that we had to take legal action but agreed it was necessary because the situation would get worse if we tolerated the insults.”
