Opposition leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has reacted angrily to reports that public servants and students were banned from attending a mass rally at Falam in Chin State on January 8.

Her reaction came after she was told at the rally that public servants and students had received verbal warnings not to attend the rally.

“If that is the case I will formally complain to the Chin State,” the leader of the National League for Democracy said.

She urged public servants and students to speak out about the ban.

“Don’t be afraid; I assure you that nothing will happen to you,” she said.

“Nobody has the right to issue such an instruction,” Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said, adding that she wanted the names of those who had issued the verbal ban.

“It is totally unfair to do this; it is an insult to the people and a violation of democracy,” she said.

“I would even like to call it a crime.”

A public servant in Falam said the instruction had been issued by the district administration.

Mizzima tried to contact the district administration but was unsuccessful.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been visiting Chin State as part of a national tour to campaign for amendments to constitutional provisions that make her ineligible from becoming president.
