General Gun Maw, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), has applied for a Myanmar passport so that he can attend a meeting with ethnic armed groups and political parties in Chiang Mai, Thailand, next week.

General Maw left Myitkyina, Kachin State, for Yangon on 17 November, accompanied by General La Aung and General Sin Hwar. He will stay in Yangon for two days while his application is processed.

U Hla Maung Shwe, a member of Union Peace-making Work Committee, said that the government has agreed to grant him a passport.

In the meantime, General Mawmet with the Minister for the President’s Office U Aung Min at the Myanmar Peace Centre on 18 November.

Ethnic armed groups and twelve political parties will open their first set of talks in Chiang Mai on 22 November, following the ethnic leaders’ summit in Laiza, Kachin State, during the last week of October.
