VMG Telecoms, the company that operates the internet telephone service Y Talk, has applied to offer free overseas calls at SEA Games venues, VMG director Aung Tun said.

The voice over internet (VOIP) service provider is seeking permission from the Ministry of Sport to provide the service and if it gets approval it will install phone booths at the venues so visitors can make overseas calls from them, Aung Tun said.

“The free service will be offered at all Games venues,” he added.

Sports Minister U Tint Hsan has already said he supports the idea, Aung Tun added.

“The free service will be offered at all Games venues,” he said.

“We proposed to provide this service at free of charge to Sports Minister and he agreed to our offer. Under this programme , the free oversea call service will be available at all Games villages and venues. So we applied to Sports Ministry and it is under consideration, not yet granted permission,” Aung Tun said.

He went on that they had the plan to provide about 150 such phone booths from which free oversea calls could be made at all Games Venues namely Yangon, Mandalay, Naypyitaw and Ngwe Saung. Two phones would be provided at each phone booth so that total phones available would be about 300, he added.

Regarding this matter, Information In-charge of Sports Ministry Htay Aung said, “Yes, there is an application for providing free oversea calls through YTalk at SEA Games venues to our ministry. We have forwarded this proposal to Ministry and it was accordingly forwarded to Finance department. But I don’t know when the higher authority will grant permission for this proposal,” to Mizzima.

VMG Telecom General Manager Aung Min Thein said that there would be no time limit for these free oversea calls and this service would be available round the clock.

“This service is provided especially for foreign visitors and the service will be available round the clock and no time limit on each call. There is no precedent of providing free oversea call service at SEA Games venues in the past. Providing this service at free of charge to foreign visitors will be convenient for them and it can uplift the image of the country,” Aung Min Thein said.

27th SEA Games will be held from December 11 to 22this year and there will also free Wi-Fi be available in all Games villages and Games venues.
