The agreement was reached on the first day of the technical teams’ preparatory meeting held at the KIO office in Myitkyina on September 16.

The meeting will be attended by KIO leaders and the Union Peace-Making Work Committee (UPWC) led by its Vice Chairman Aung Min. They have agreed to have the union-level meeting at the Majwe Hall in Myitkyina city.

Hla Maung Shwe, Advisor of the Myanmar Peace Centre (MPC) said that they discussed war refugees and nationwide ceasefire accord at the preparatory meeting.

“We discussed three agendas. The first is to meet again during the union-level meeting. The meeting will be held in the first week of October. We agreed on all points in general,” Hla Maung Shwe told Mizzima.

The technical teams’ meeting was attended by an 8-member KIO technical team led by Col. Awng La, observers Daw Ja Nan and Daw Nan Yaw and a 7-member delegation from the MPC.

Daw Daung Kha, Spokesman of the KIO technical team, said three agendas were discussed on the first day of the talks and on the second day, i.e. September 17, they will discuss formation of a joint monitoring committee, which was already agreed by both sides in previous meetings and issues pertaining to military affairs.

The UPWC and the KIO Peace Committee agreed in May to form technical teams, after which the KIO technical team opened its office in Myitkyina in July.

The government troops and KIA troops fought on September 15 while the technical teams were holding meetings.

Minister Aung Min reportedly sent a letter to KIO on September 11 on the recent armed conflicts that took place in Inkhaga village, Machanbaw Township, Kachin State.
