The Myanmar Tourist Guides Association told Mizzima that starting October 1, licensed tour guides will have to be paid a minimum of USD 35 per day as professional fees.

U Tun Myat, Chief Executive of the Myanmar Tourist Guides Association said that minimum fees were not specified before but now appropriate professional fees have been fixed for tourist guides as the Education Committee under the association has upgraded the quality of tourist guides.

“We have specified daily fees as travel and tour businesses are booming and we have upgraded the quality of our tourist guides”, said U Tun Myat.

Currently, travel and tour companies pay tourist guides USD 20 to 50 based on their professional skills, language proficiency and experience.

“Daily fees were varied earlier. Now tourists will have to pay at least USD 35 even if the tourist guide is not experienced. Some might demand USD 40 - 50, if they are experienced”, added U Tun Myat.

The minimum daily fee is payable to all tourist guides, who have valid license throughout the country.
