Alexandre Pebereau, CEO of France-based Orange International Carriers announced on September 10 that international roaming service will be enabled in Myanmar before the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games). The service will help consumers with international phone numbers in Myanmar to receive and make direct phone calls to most foreign countries.

The announcement was made at the 'Myanmar Connect 2013' forum held in the MICC Hall in Naypyitaw. He added that they would make it possible to connect with many foreign countries after the roaming service is implemented. The project will be a collaboration between Orange and Myanmar Post and Telecommunication (MPT).

“We have already made an agreement with Myanmar Post and Telecommunication to undertake the project. We will be working together to connect with all telecom operators around the world. The service will be launched before the SEA Games”, said Alexandre Pebereau.

Myanmar is  connected to  43 operators from 23 countries through the international roaming service, and Pebereau assured that they will be working to connect with more countries in the future.

MPT said that Myanmar has already made international roaming connections with France, Switzerland, Spain and other countries using Orange Hub.

“We are negotiating with Orange for a joint project for connecting foreign countries using roaming system. We have not signed any official contracts”, said Kyaw Soe Win, General Manager of MPT.

Linking with the international roaming service uses bilateral system and roaming hub system as a buffer. Countries that are connected through the roaming hub system are – Korea, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, China, Hong Kong and Indonesia. Moreover, Myanmar is also connected with Brunei, Malaysia, Philippine, South Korea, Japan and Sri Lanka with the roaming service.

Orange has received a reserved license to work as a local telecommunication operator.  They have announced that they will also be working for other telecom services with MPT besides the roaming service.
