Teachers’ Associations from Yangon University, Yangon Eastern University, Yangon Western University, Dagon University and universities in Mandalay released a joint statement on August 31, objecting the wrongful termination of Daw Soe Soe Khaing for attending the pre-ceremony press conference of the 8888 Silver Jubilee.

On 30 August, the Ministry of Education announced that Daw Soe Soe Khaing was expelled from her job for taking leave without permission and her unpunctuality.

“The ministry of Education has neither responded nor contacted me till now. More than getting my job back, I want an explanation. They have insulted my dignity by accusing me of taking leave without permission”, said Daw Soe Soe Khaing.

She said that Intelligence officers from Pyinmanar Township contacted her on August 25 asking her to submit an appeal for leniency, but she refused.

“I will not plead for clemency, since I did nothing wrong”, she added.

U Arkar Moe Thu, the Central Executive from the UTA in Dagon said, “The charged misconduct and the punishment meted out is unfair. It is un-democratic. Daw Soe Soe Khaing's termination threatens not only teachers but also all other government employees.”

The Teachers’ Association has also requested International Labor Organization (ILO) to support Daw Soe Soe Khaing in August regarding her wrongful termination.

Daw Soe Soe Khaing has been charged with 'taking leave without permission from August 10 to 14', 'going on a long journey without permission', and “connections with political organizations”.
