Committee to investigate suspected arson attempt on Islamic school

The District Administrative office has formed a committee to investigate a suspected arson attempt on an Islamic high school in B Quarter in Thingangyun Township.

It is reported that someone thew a flaming torch onto the thatched nipa roof of the school at around 2:00 a.m. on September 4.

Thet Tun, a police officer who is a member of the Investigation Committee told reporters, “We are still interrogating three students who reportedly doused the fire. According to their testimony, one of them climbed to the roof and dropped the torch onto the ground.”

The Thingangyun Township General Administrative Chief will Chair the Investigation Committee. The township Police Chief and Fire Brigade Chief will work as members.

On Wednesday afternoon, Thingangyun Township MP Thein Nyunt, the Quarter Chief and the Police Chief went to the school to assess the site.

According to Headmaster Khin Aung, there are about 270 students living and studying at the school.

“Now, we are not worried any more,” he said on Wednesday afternoon.

He added that they have not had any problems in the past and they do not wish to have any   in the future. He told reporters that they want to co-exist peacefully.

MP Thein Nyunt told Mizzima that the teachers of the school and the Muslims residents in the Quarter were satisfied by the authorities’ effort to investigate the suspected arson attempt and peace has been restored in the whole township.

Currently three police officers, ten policemen, ten part-time firemen, and ten administrative staff of the Quarter are providing security at the school, officer Thet Tun told reporters.
