The Speaker has sent a formal letter to the President on August 29 demanding immediate return of seized land that are no longer needed or used by the government.
U Shwe Man the Union Parliament Speaker said, “I believe that the President will show sympathy to the farmers who are poor and weak.”
Before sending the letter to the President, the Speaker read it out at the Union Parliament session on August 29.
The letter states, “According to the reports from MPs, the farmers are dissatisfied with the MPs who represent them and work for their welfare. Therefore, there is concern that it will hinder the process of democratic transition.”
The Speaker also said that some farmers are also being incited by political opportunists.
He added further that, “In the past, although land was grabbed from farmers in the name of development purposes, there was no development in reality because of the weakness and false intentions of those who were responsible for it.”
The 7th Union Parliament meeting attended by 70 MPs, unanimously agreed that farmers are suffering because of their land was seized.
The Parliament has also asked the government to return seized lands immediately.
