Some 150 Buddhist monks and civilians took part in a demonstration and prayer service at Sule Pagoda in Yangon on Sunday to pay respect to those injured in the July 7 bomb blast at the holy site of Bodh Gaya in northern India.

Having received permission from local authorities to conduct the public event, Myanmar monks at Sule urged the Indian government to take effective action against those who committed the attack, which left at least five injured including two monks.

Abbot Sayadaw U Pa Nyi Nanda of the Thipitakatnikal monastery in South Dagon Township said, “The reason we are demanding action from the Indian government is because Bodh Gaya is a sacred site for Buddhists. Action must be taken against these terrorists.”

Lawyer Aye Paing, a legal adviser to the Theravada Buddhism Dhamma Network, said that the demonstration was not a protest against any religion, only against those who committed the atrocity.

In Thailand, a gathering of 300 people led by monks held a protest in front of the Indian embassy in Bangkok on July 10 to commemorate the bomb blast.

Demonstrations also took part across India on July 8.

A sketch of a suspect was issued by Indian police on July 16 following the release of four suspects on July 9.
