The University Students’ Union will organize a campaign throughout 35 townships across Myanmar to sound sirens for the fall of General Aung San and his comrades on Friday at 10:37 a.m. this Martyrs’ Day.

The union has prepared CDs to play the siren sound. “We’ve also told some car drivers to honk their horns at that time,” said Nan Lin, a union member.

Another union member, Si Thu Maung, said that political and social organizations in Pathein, Hinthada, Dawei and Loikaw are prepared for the siren-sounding and have already received the CDs.

In townships throughout Yangon, students, residents and civil society will hold ceremonies in honor of the holiday. The University Students’ Union plans to bear a flag of the national peacock, which will be dyed black to commemorate the martyrs, union member Nan Lin told Mizzima.

In Yangon, the union will sound sirens for one minute and participants will gather at five locations throughout the city. They will then march to Martyrs’ Hill, bow to the martyrs and lay wreaths on the hill.

More than 500 people from some 50 organizations will gather at the Bogyoke Statue in Yangon’s Bogyoke Park at 9:30 a.m. before marching to Martyrs’ Hill, said Yan Naing Tun, an organizer of the march.

“We did not apply for permission [for the march]. I don’t think we need official permission because Martyrs’ Day is a special day. We will submit a letter to the regional police force that we will undertake these activities,” he said.

Participants in the march have been requested to wear black clothing. Along with the University Students’ Union, the National League for Democracy and the 88 Generation Students’ Group will turn out for the march from Bogyoke Statue to Martyrs’ Hill.
