Iran is prepared to begin shipping humanitarian aid consignments to Myanmar’s ethnic Rohingya population, it was announced this week.

An Iranian delegation met with Myanmar officials in Naypyitaw on Wednesday to discuss bilateral ties as well as address Tehran’s position on Myanmar’s Muslim minority, according to Fars News Agency (FNA).

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia and Pacific Affairs, Seyyed Abbas Araqchi, expressed to his counterpart the concerns of Iranian authorities for the ongoing communal clashes between Myanmar’s Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims.

Araqchi stated that Iran is ready to send aid shipments to Myanmar, and help to improve the miserable living conditions of Rohingyas, Press TV reported.

The Iranian minister also urged the Myanmar government to adopt effective measures to properly resolve the problem.

“We have conveyed the concerns of the Muslim countries and communities in this regard to Myanmar’s officials and voiced our readiness to resolve the crisis and reduce the clashes in the region,” the Iranian deputy foreign minister told FNA prior to the meeting.

Increased Iranian involvement follows last week’s call by the Malaysian Foreign Minister for Myanmar to bring perpetrators to justice and better safeguard the country’s Rohingya population.

Member of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, Ebrahim Aqamohammadi, said on Tuesday: “The attacks against Muslims in Myanmar is carried out with a green light from the United States, and the government has not yet responded to growing criticism about its inability to protect ethnic groups and minorities.”

In June, the United Nations refugee agency said over 140,000 people remain displaced in Myanmar a year after violence first began in Rakhine State.

Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have issued separate statements both calling on Myanmar to take action to protect the Rohingya Muslim population against extremists.
