Toshiba launched a branch office in Yangon on Wednesday at an opening ceremony hosted by its Singapore-based subsidiary, Toshiba Asia Pacific Pte Ltd, which was attended by the Chief Minister of the Yangon Region Government, Myint Swe.

Toshiba Corporation revealed in a statement that it will, along with KDDI Corporation, one of the largest network solution providers in Japan, supply a modular data center for the securities exchange system in Myanmar.

Toshiba won an order from major Japanese think-tank, Daiwa Institute of Research Ltd, to supply the center.

The securities exchange will be opened in 2015 by the Daiwa Institute of Research and Central Bank of Myanmar in Yangon.

The Myanmar deal marks the first time Toshiba have supplied its modular data center in an overseas market.
"Toshiba is delighted to make this new step forward in Myanmar," said Hidejiro Shimomitsu, Corporate Senior Executive Vice President of Toshiba Corporation.

"We hope to contribute to Myanmar's development across our product lines, from infrastructure solutions to home electronics. Our home appliance business in Myanmar started since the 1980s via distributors, and our automatic washing machines are still the most popular brand in Myanmar. Toshiba will fully leverage our technological progress and leading edge product capabilities to offer people a better future,” he said today.

The chief representative of the Yangon Branch Office, Tetsuya Yoneda, said: "Toshiba can support providing stable power generation and transmission solutions that provide the backbone for economic growth for Myanmar.”

He added: "Currently, in Myanmar, the power distribution per population is still limited to 25 percent, and this is planned to be expanded in the coming years. Toshiba has supplied equipment for Sedawgyi hydropower plant in 1985, and we aim to contribute more to the country infrastructure.”

Ensuring sustained growth will require broad investments in social infrastructure, including power generation and distribution, and Toshiba's Yangon Branch Office will investigate the market and promote business in social infrastructure and other areas, such as consumer products, Toshiba said.
