The Muse- Nant Kham Traders Association said last week that roughly 2,000 tons of rice per day were now being exported to China via the Muse border crossing in northern Shan State.

“The rice barns are all full. We barely have time to get the sacks of rice off the trucks and they are all gone,” said Han Sein, the chairman of the association.

“Most of the rice is coming from Ayeyarwaddy Region,” said Mya Maung, a trader in Muse. “The demand is rising because of an increase in the value of the Chinese Yuan.”

He also noted that orders had been especially high in previous weeks because of an announcement in the Sino-Myanmar border town that rice taxes would start being collected in advance starting June 14.
