Security has been beefed up in Kyar Inn Seik Gyi Township, Karen State after anti-election posters were put up in the town on October 21, a local said.

“Anti-election posters were distributed in the town. Authorities tightened security in the town soon after at night. Officials took down the anti-election posters. Troops have been deployed on the roads and they are monitoring the movement of the local people,” the local told KIC.

Anti-election posters were put up around the hospital, school, government departments, and some villages on October 21 evening in Kyar Inn Seik Gyi town making the regime beef up security.

“Nobody knows who put up the posters. Anti-election posters could be seen at police stations, the township peace and development council office, schools, public areas, vehicle gates and markets. They were also found in Kyar Inn village,” a local eyewitness said.

“The posters exhort people to boycott the election. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s views are included in the posters. It also said the 2010 election would not be free and fair, there will be no peace and the military will legitimize its power,” he said.

At a time when the authorities are gearing up to hold the election smoothly, the anti-election activity has sounded a discordant note for the regime. Such, anti-election leaflets and stickers were pasted in Bago region last month.
