A Karen woman who resettled to Australia from Burma in 1999 received an award for her work in the community from the Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard.

Say Htoo Eh Moero receiving the award (photo-Saw Htoo Saw)Say Htoo Eh Moero received recognition for her work with the Australian Karen community when she was presented with the ‘Above and Beyond’ Award from Prime Minister Julia Gillard last week.

Say Htoo Eh Moero, Wyndham Community and Education Centre settlement worker from the Australian State of Victoria was given the award for ‘dedicating her time to supporting Wyndham’s Karen community’.

Prime Minster Gillard said Say Htoo Eh Moero had gone the extra distance to make life easier for other people.

“They don’t do these things because they have to, they do them because they want to make a difference.”

Say Htoo Eh Moero said the award was not expected.

“I didn’t expect to receive the award. I’m happy to get the award. I feel this reward is not just for me, but also for all Karen people. I’m proud that the Prime Minister knows I am Karen.”

Say Htoo Eh Moero encouraged all resettled Karen to get involved in their community and to honor and dignify the Karen people.
