National League for Democracy, at Myaungmya Township submitted an official complaint against the village administration head for making threats against the NLD youth members’ election campaign team.

DSC_0107During a NLD's election campaign trip on March 15th to Shan Kyaw village, Myaungmya Township in the Irrawaddy Region, an argument broke out with village administration head and the NLD team.

U Win Shwe, a member of the NLD’s Myaungmya Township campaign team, alleges that the day after the incident, the village administration headman came to the front of the NLD's campaign office and verbally abused the NLD members.

“He [headman] used a lot of obscene language. What will we gain by your activities? What will you give to us? If you give something to us, we will join your party."

U Win Shwe claimed unknown people in the village vandalized NLD campaign election posters – those of by-election candidate Mahn Johny were cut with a knife.

The Myaungmya Township NLD submitted official complaints to the province Election Commission, to the Township and to the police station, but has yet to receive a response.

Karen News contacted the Irrawaddy Region Election Commission to get a response to the NLD complaint, the Regional Election Commission chairman, U Myo Tun denied knowledge of the NLD’s complaint and said.

“We don't know any information in regard to that issue."

There will be a total four candidates in Myaungmya Township, Dr. Phyo Ko Ko Thint San from the Union Solidarity and Development Party, the current head of ACE Company and the son of the government’s Sport, Hotel and Travel minister, U Tint San, Mahn Johny from the NLD and U Aung Myo Hlaing from the National Democratic Force.

There are 277 ballot houses in Myaungmya and 180,000 people are deemed eligible for voting, it is estimated 50% of them are Karen.
