The municipality in Hakha town has ordered people to use a new graveyard, which is four furlongs from the town as of next year. But no detailed information has been released about what will happen to the graveyard in use now.

The people in six blocks in Hakha town may face difficulties as the new graveyard is far from the town.

“We have to use a hearse to bury the dead as the new place is too far for us. At the same time most people cannot afford to hire a hearse and the vehicle is a rare commodity. It will pose a big problem for us,” said a local in Hakha town.

In fact, people are unhappy with the order of the civic body, but they cannot do anything, he added.

“Although there is a problem of distance, it is a good thing to shift the graveyard which is close to the town to outside it,” said a local youth.

The new graveyard land is owned by the government and the total area is more than 10 acres.

In 2006-2007, the authorities destroyed a graveyard in Matupi town and turned it into a golf course, before the skeletons or bones were collected by the concerned families.
