7 August 2010: Heroin worth Rs. 7 lakhs were seized from a Burmese national on 5 August in Mizoram, a northeast state of India by the Central Anti-Drug Squad (CADS), the Excise and Narcotics department’s staff and police.

According to The Zozam Times, the heroin carrier Thawkhleimang (33) son of Tawkkam of Tahan block in Kalemyo, Sagaing division Burma was detained in Saron block, Aizawl city, Mizoram. He has been kept at the Central jail in Aizawl.

There is a proliferation of drugs and alcohol in Aizawl city from June 2010. Supplies of heroin and Proxyvon are increasing by the day. Proxyvon is brought to Mizoram from other states in India and heroin comes mainly from Burma.

Earlier, the Mizoram Central Anti-Drug Squad (CADS) and police had seized 138 grams of heroin valued at Rs. 91 lakhs in Bawngkawn block in Aizawl on July 9. It was smuggled in from Nolianthang, Letpanchaung village, Kalemyo Sagaing division in Burma.

The newspaper said that CADS was set up by the Young Mizo Association (YMA) on 29 May 2010 and it has seized 996 Proxyvon tablets valued at Rs. 29,880, three bottles of Heroin penicillin valued at Rs. 14,000 and 50 bottles of alcohol worth Rs. 25,000 this month. CADS has seized drugs worth Rs. 48 lakhs since its inception.
