14 June 2010: Admission fees for schools for the 2010 academic session starting in June has been raised by the Education Department in Thantlang Township, Chin state.

“The admission fees for the primary section is Kyat 1500, for middle school it is Kyat 2000, in the ninth standard in high school it is Kyat 3000 and for the tenth standard it is Kyat 4000,” said a local.

In the academic session in 2009 the department collected Kyat 1000 for the primary section, Kyat 1500 for middle school, Kyat 2500 for the ninth standard and Kyat 3000 for the tenth standard in high school.

“Although the academic session began on June 1, 2010 in Chin state, we could not start it in our township as there is no supply of text books and other study equipments,” said a local teacher.

“It is very difficult to put our children in school as we are facing an economic crisis in our state. Now the military government has increased admission fees yet again adding to our troubles,” said a parent.

Similarly, the Education Departments in other townships in Chin state have increased admission fees and have collected donations for sports, school equipments, parent association fees, examinations and checking fees.
