A 300-mile stretch of road between the towns of Hakha, Matupi, and Paletwa will be finished by 2015-2016. The road is being constructed by the union government and will fill in the last remaining gaps in the region’s main road.  So far, “about 28 miles of the Matupi to Paletwa main road has been completed for use by motorcycles and cars,” an administrator of Phanai Village told Khonumthung News.

In addition, Assistant Director of Chin State’s Ministry of Construction, U Myo Aung, said that the main road from Hakha to Matupi will be widened from 28 to 40 feet, and that 75 percent of the road construction budget will be spent on the main road, while the remainder could be used for other local projects related to the road construction project.

“You could request road-related projects for your villages during the construction of this road, and I will submit your needs to the state government. This is an opportune time for consulting with your villages and I’ll do my best,” he added.

Meanwhile, a person from Phanai Village told Khonumthung News that locals are optimistic that good roads will facilitate the development of Chin State, the poorest state in the country.
