An appalling increase in the use of illegal drugs by students attending Kalay University in Kalemyo, Sagaing Region is worrying parents and teachers alike. A new report has cited a sharp increase on the campus that is attended by many from the Chin ethnicity.

Kaley-UniversityKalemyo Township Police Superintendent Soe Myint said that there are many illegal drug users in the university and swift action will be being taken. The police superintendent says the drugs are being consumed in “cigarettes or though the chewing of betel nut”

“Action has been taken against one student,” Soe Myint warned.

One student said that because of the use of illegal drugs theft has increased around the university campus. Most of the users will consume the drugs at the football grounds or near the Nine-mile River outside the university. Some are even use injecting it.

“They are taking drugs in groups and don’t behave like alcoholics. They are very cool in class, but many items are lost, and teachers cannot do anything,” he said.
