A precious orchid being harvested from southern Chin state, Burma, is believed to hold medicinal qualities that can prevent and even cure cancer. The flower has become a top seller in Burma's black market.
The orchids are being imported to Mandalay from Kanpetlet Township, Chin state, and then sent to the black market in Mindat Township and China.
A complaint letter has been submitted to the Chin state Forestry Ministry demanding that the smuggling is stopped.
Most of the country's wild orchids are in Chin, Shan , Kachin and Sagaing Division. There are an estimated 841 known orchid species in Burma but some experts say there could actually be as many as 1,500.
Despite the fact that illegal orchid harvesting is strictly prohibited by Mindat Township authorities, the traders in Kanpetlet Town aren't being penalized for selling the flowers.
The orchid harvesting has been ongoing since November of last year. The smugglers have also been cutting down many trees. This is causing concern for residents who worry about the rampant deforestation affecting the region.
