Local alcohol brewers have being asking for permission to produce alcohol from license holders in the town to sell special, middle and lower qualities respectively. There are two country liquor producers who operate legally in the town.

“Specially made wine is being sold at 1500 Kyats per bottle, medium quality is for 1000 Kyats and the lowest quality is for 800 Kyats per bottle,” said an owner of a wine shop from Falam.

The producers of local wine buy the lowest quality of rice to make alcohol for 15000 Kyats and produce around 20 bottles of high quality alcohol while making medium and low quality produce, said a local.

“Mainly local youth drink while purchasers come from other villages also. Some drivers from Kalemyo, Sagaing division buy at whole sale rates to sell in Falam town and Hakha, the capital of Chin state,” said a local.

Alcohol production is prohibited by the Christian community, youth groups and women wings in the state, but there has been an increase in the number of Chin youth consuming alcohol becoming burdens on their parents. Khonumthung news
