Teknaf Bangladesh: Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) seized 1,491 Burmese Yaba tablets from the Burma-Bangladesh border, said a local police aide from Sabrang in Teknaf union.

On a tip off, a BDR team from Teknaf BDR camp went to Sabrang village of Teknaf union and seized 1,491 Burmese Yaba tablets from two persons, who were carrying it from Burma to Bangladesh.

The arrested were identified as Noor Amin (23), son of Ali, from Maungdaw Township and Ibrahim Khalil (25), son of Sayed Ahmed, from Naya Para of Sabrang union, Bangladesh.

They were handed over to Teknaf police station and a case filed against them.

Burma is a major source of Methamphetamine tablets known as Yaba tablets. Bangladesh authorities frequently seize Yaba tablets on the Burma-Bangladesh border, but it keeps coming into Bangladesh from Burma, said a local elder from Teknaf.

The heroin smugglers are Burma’s border security force (Nasaka) or Sarapa (Military Intelligence) or the army or police officers of Maungdaw Township. They carry heroin or Yaba tablets from Shan State through their agents and send it to Bangladesh with the help of their collaborators, said a trader from Maungdaw town on condition of anonymity.

The young generation are become drug addicts from frustration, unemployment poverty, lack of love, sympathy and disappointment. The negligence of youngsters, increasing gross materialism and selfishness of parents are other important reasons for becoming drug addicts, said a local educated person in Cox’s Bazaar.

The fate of the addict is serious. Many a time he has to depend on others. Drug-addiction leads one to many other evils and abuses and other anti-social activities.  The addict by any means tries to have drugs in time at any cost. A remedy is urgently needed. To save the young generation from drug addiction the government and educated people should come forward and take necessary steps, he added.

Awareness should be raised among people of all classes through the mass media. Drug import should be banned with an iron hand. Drug vendors and drug sellers should be given exemplary punishment for open sale in both the countries, said a businessman from Maungdaw.

Drug addiction causes fatal diseases. So, more and more people, government and non-government agencies, social groups, conscious youth organizations and other corporate bodies should come forward to fight it.

There is “Strong international criminal and financial networks controlling Bangladesh’s drug supply chain,” said a former adviser to the caretaker government ASM Shapan.

Bangladesh is between two countries, India and Burma, from which narcotic drugs come to Bangladesh and it has become a big market for narcotic drugs.
