Maungdaw, Arakan State: An Arakanese Rohingya woman died after being given an overdose of medicine in the general hospital of Maungdaw, Arakan state on January 30, according to eyewitness in the hospital.

Nur Bahar hailing from Oo Shaikya ( Bura Shida Para) was suffering from leprosy for a long time and was admitted for treatment, said a relative of the patient.

Nur Bahar was admitted hospital on January 29, 2010 and the doctor in-charge U Kyaw Maung Maung Sein told the staff nurse to give medicines on time as it was a long term treatment, according to the hospital staff.

On the direction of the head doctor, the nurse gave Nur Bahar five medicines at about 16:00 hours on January 30. She died at 20:00 hours in the hospital, said eyewitness from the hospital.

“We don’t know what kind of medicine the nurse gave Nur Bahar, but we saw there were five pieces,” the eyewitness said.

The doctor told us she died and did not give any reason, said the relative. “Only we know that the nurse gave five medicines.”

In Maungdaw, the treatment in hospital depends on the bribe to the staff. There is no humanitarian attitude in the hospital, especially for Arakanese Rohingya. Most of the staff treat Rohingya like animal, said a local elder who admitted a relative to the hospital.
