Teknaf, Bangladesh: A man was arrested with 1 kg of heroin yesterday by the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) from the check-post of Whykhong of Teknaf, while he was bringing the contraband to Teknaf from Cox's Bazar to be smuggled to Burma, according to a BDR source.

According to sources, the heroin was brought by the smuggler by a special mini-bus. When it was checked by the BDR at Whykhong, they found heroin in the bus, which had the number J-11-0075.

The arrested smuggler was Bangladeshi, has been identified as Farid Ahamed (32), son of Shabbir Ahamed and hails from Shikdar Para of Nilla under the Teknaf Union of Cox's Bazaar district.

The operation was led by Major Helal Mohammed Khan of 42 BDR battalion of Teknaf.

The BDR is of the opinion that the heroin was smuggled to India from Pakistan and then to Bangladesh. However, it was again brought to Teknaf to be smuggled to Burma through the transit point of Teknaf, a close aide of the BDR said.

Normally, heroin is smuggled to Bangladesh from Burma, but this time it was the other way round and it was being smuggled to Burma. "I think that it was returned to the smuggler's house for safety as there was some problem in keeping it in a secure place in Cox's Bazar , said a trader from Cox's Bazar.

Earlier, the police of Teknaf had also seized heroin worth one hundred thousand taka from the Bangladesh-Burma border two days ago, said sources.
