Teknaf, Bangladesh: Over 50 Rohingya fishermen including Bangladeshi fisherman went missing in the Bay of Bengal after their trawlers capsized in rough waters following a depression on the night of September 15.

About 54 fishermen, mostly Rohingyas went to the Bay of Bengal to catch fish from Saint-Martin Island, but they did not come back. The fishermen were caught in gusty winds accompanied by heavy rain and are feared to have drowned in the Bay, said Mohamed Yakub, a local fisherman.

Some of the missing fishermen are identified as Kalu Meah (35), Amir Ali (38), Hussain Ahmed (40), Rafique Uddin (27), Habib Ullah (28), Quaila Meah (19), Rashid Ahmed (22), Didar Hussain (34) and Nabi Hussain (26).

Chairman Faruz Ahmed from Saint-Martin said that tidal surges in areas surrounding Saint-Martin destroyed some houses and shops. Twelve fishing boats capsized following heavy winds and driving rain near Saint-Martin Island.

Besides, eight fishermen including Rohingyas and Bengalis from Teknaf went to the Bay of Bengal to catch fish on Monday taking a boat from the owner Md. Aminur, but they did not return, said Hussin, one of the relatives of the missing fishermen.

According to sources, many boats and fishermen have been missing in Bay of Bengal since Monday night.

On September 16, the northern side of Maungdaw was inundated. Strong gusts of winds destroyed many shrimp projects, according to a local elder.
