There is no rule of law in effect to protect Rohingyas in Maungdaw. They have no human rights and their properties are not protected from vandalism or theft, said a Maungdaw politician.
“A Rohingya shop owner wanted to report a case of robbery for his electronic goods shop in Maungdaw police station, but the police officer didn’t accept his report. Instead they arrested and detained him.”
Hafez Hussion, 42; son of Jamal, a former land survey from Ward No. 5, lost 5M Kyat after his electronic shop was robbed last week. The shop on Harbor Rd. in Ward No. 1 was robbed by Rakhine youth, according to an elder who lives in the area.
Maungdaw is a border town that is controlled by Buddhist authorities. They can arbitrarily decide what the law is and Muslims must follow it, said a Maungdaw student.
“Here is no security for the properties or lives of the Rohingya community. The authorities use their power to kill Rohingyas like they are animals and illegally take their properties.”
