The sixth meeting of Bangladesh-Burma Joint Commission for Economic Co-operation began at the Hotel Purbani in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Sunday. The purpose of the annual meeting is to encourage co-operation and bilateral trade between the two countries. The last year’s meeting in July took place in Naypyidaw.

Burma’s Deputy Minister for Commerce Dr. Pwint San and  Bangladesh’s Commerce Secretary Mahbub Ahmed will attend the event to discuss topics related to air and shipping links, and cooperation in energy and agriculture sectors.

According to various sources, it’s believed the Burma delegation will also meet privately with Bangladeshi  Commerce Minister GM Quader at his Secretariat office.

Bangladeshi business leaders say bilateral trade with Burma have remained virtually untapped due a lack of infrastructure  in air, water and road transportation, and a formal trade channel.
