Kawkareik, Karen State: Two mosques were attacked with grenades in Kawkareik, according to a Muslim leader.

Three grenades were thrown at Kyondo Mosque and Rayneseegone Mosque (Darga Mosque) in the evening, on Oct.28 and 29.

“No one is killed or wounded, but there was  heavy damage to the properties and surrounding grounds, ” said the Muslim leader.

“The hand grenades were thrown by two persons from a motorbike,” said a local trader.

According to residents this was the first time the mosques have been attacked in this way. No-one has any information as to why this took place but they happened after residents expressed fear about holding the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha from Oct.23-27. Muslims in Rangoon decided to suspend the holiday in support of their brothers and sisters in Arakan State.

Kawkareik residents wondered if the attacks on the mosques were related to last week’s communal violence in Arakan State.

Approximately 84 people were killed and 28,000 displaced by the mob violence that for the most part targeted Muslim populations. The UN estimates that 27,300 of those displaced were Muslim.
