Maungdaw, Arakan State: Burmese border security personnel have been checking the homes of Rohingya families in nearby villages for what they say are illegal repairs and renovations done without permission of authorities and demanding pebbles for road construction as a fine, according to a village administration officer from Nwahyondaung village.

Villagers were fined 5 to 10 pebble pits, each measuring nine square feet, an elder from Kyiganpinsaid.

However, villagers accuse the officers of only using the scheme as a new way of extorting money from the Rohingya community because they will accept 5,000 kyat, the recent market value for each pebble pit, instead of the pebbles, a teacher from MaungHnamasaid.
