Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh: A Burmese national was arrested at the Bangladesh- Burma border by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on March 18, while attempting to cross illegally into Bangladesh, according to a BGB official.

“He was arrested atTaungbro, at 6:00 pm, while entering Bangladesh without legal documents,” the source said.

The man has been identified as San MaungHlaMarma (35), from Taungbro,Maungdaw Township, according to sources.

On being tipped off, officers from BGB Battalion No. 17 went to the border point and arrested San MaungHla on suspicion as he was crossing without  a border pass.

The operation was led by Mohamed MuzamelHaque, the commander of Taungbro BGB out-post.

The Commanding Officer, Lt. Col. KhalekulZaman, of Battalion No. 17, said that BGB has kept him in  custody for more interrogation.

The officer also said that the BGB will call a meeting regarding the matter and he will be handed over to Burma’s border security force (Nasaka).

Every day, people from Burma enter Bangladesh legally and illegally for business, seeking medical treatment, to contact their relatives abroad and  for working in Bangladesh to support their family members, said a local villager named Sayed  from the border area.
