Maungdaw, Arakan State: One hundred and sixty students from Maungdaw High School are unable to take matriculation examinations which started recently, according to a teacher from Maungdaw.
“The students are not qualified to sit for the examinations because of their lack of class attendance. Most of the students are Rohingya,” he said.
Of the 1616 students taking exams in Maungdaw district examination center this year, 951 students are from Maungdaw High School. Most of the students are Rohingya,according to the Maungdaw Education Board.
KyawZawTun, the Headmaster of Maungdaw High School, had tried to promote the education of the school and taught the students with extra classes, where he collected 1000 kyats per student per month as the school was in the lowest position in Arakan State last year’s matriculation examination, said an elder from Maungdaw.
“The headmaster tried to promote the school education but the teachers were only interested in private tutoring in the home,” the source said.
“The headmaster wants to show good results in the examination and collected 700,000 kyats each from some students and had taken responsibly that the students will pass in the examination- but another teacher, Daw HlaHlaKyaw, collected 550,000 kyats per head for all subjects from students who sat for the examination.”
